•The Edge of the U.S. in 1854•
This is one of the more detailed early maps of the state of Arkansas. When the original hand-colored map (from which our replica came) was made, Arkansas had not yet been a state for 20 years and was considered to be a distant wilderness by most (as it was at the edge of the nation).
The Colton family was one of the most well known and successful publishers of map and atlases in the United States for over 60 years. Born in Longmeadow, MA in 1800, Joseph H. Colton relocated to New York City in 1830, where he began a publishing business.
During his first 10 years, Colton did not have a resident engraver, and relied upon copyrights purchased from other map makers. This however became fruitful when by 1850 his firm was the primary publisher of guidebooks and immigrant railroad maps.
Born in 1827, Colton's son George Woolworth and brother Charles B. joined the firm. They published a number of School Atlases and Pocket Maps from the 1850's to early 1890's.
