Colorado had only been a state for 3 years when this map was made. Most of the state was still wild with gold and silver deposits still being discovered across the state (gold wouldn't be discovered at Cripple Creek, Colorado for another 14 years).
The original hand-painted map, from which this replica was made, was created by one of America's finest mapmakers, Samuel Mitchell, Jr. of Philadelphia. having just taken control of his father's firm, the younger Mitchell was intent on making his mark in the industry with some of the most beautiful maps ever made. The engraved borders of Mitchell's maps were some of the finest ever created. Over the years, the quality of the borders would deteriorate, as he increased production and reduced costs. S.A. Mitchell, Jr.'s maps are among the most sought after 19th century pieces.
