• Atlanta, Before Being Burned •
After steadily advancing south from Chattanooga, General William Tecumsah Sherman entered Atlanta in September of 1864. In his ongoing attempt to break the will of the Confederacy, Sherman ordered most of the city burned in November, 1864; just prior to setting off on his famous (or infamous) "March to the Sea."
The stereographic photograph, from which this image was created, was likely taken between September and November of 1864. It was taken by Brady Studio photographer, George Barnard, who was went to Atlanta in September of 1864 and accompanied Sherman on his march to Savannah. It depicts life in Atlanta under Union military control. The streets are relatively quiet, as many of the city's inhabitants had fled as Union troops advanced on the city. This extraordinary photograph was created by combining the stereographic images, to form a single photo. It was then painstakingly digitally corrected and enhanced to provide an almost perfect image of a historic scene.
