•The Young City of Dallas•
By 1890, Dallas had grown to be the largest city in Texas, with a population of more than 38,000. The city was a Texas rail hub and was the center of a booming Texas cotton industry in 1892. The boom times in Dallas were to slow dramatically after the "Panic of 1893." It wasn't until the early 20th Century that the River Improvement Plans mentioned (and shown) on this map, actually began to take shape.
This large panorama is one of the only ones done of Dallas in the 1800s. It depicts a detailed view of the city from Oak Cliff. Around the edges of this piece are vignettes of various important buildings. Running along the bottom are advertisements for a number of businesses that offered products and services that might be needed by new businesses or residents.
